/// FAQ

The questions we get most often.

The short answers. Each one links to the page that says more, where there is more to say.

The basics

Is Route Planner free?

Yes. Creating a HuntLog account is free and planning routes is free — there is no subscription and no paid tier for the planner.

Do I need an account?

Yes, one free account. It is what saves your routes, keeps your routing preferences per sport, and lets you open a route again on another device.

Is there an app?

Route Planner installs as a web app: on a phone, add it to the home screen and it opens full-screen like any other app, with no app store involved.

Planning a route

Which sports can I plan?

Road cycling, gravel, MTB, running and trail running, hiking and trekking, and skating — each on its own routing engine. Bikepacking, multisport and triathlon are supported as multi-track stories, and swimming can be recorded even though no router can draw it.

Can I choose what kind of route I get?

Yes. Every sport has its own presets — scenic, fast, more unpaved, more climbing — plus switches to skirt town centres, avoid steps or stay on cycleways, and advanced settings for difficulty, off-road preference and climb penalties.

Can I see gradients and elevation gain before I go?

Yes. The elevation profile sits under the map, gradient is computed metre by metre rather than averaged over a climb, and total ascent, distance and estimated time update while you drag a point.

Does it tell me the surface?

Yes. Every route carries a breakdown of how much of it is tarmac, gravel or path, so you know what is under the tyres before you commit to it.

Can I edit a route the router gave me?

Yes. Drag any point and the route follows it; drag the line itself and a new point appears where you pulled it. The figures and the profile recalculate as you do.

GPX and devices

Can I export the route as a GPX?

Yes. Any route exports as a standard GPX track — the line, its points and the elevation along it — which loads on Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, Suunto, Coros, Polar, Bryton and anything else that reads GPX.

Can I import a track I already have?

Yes. Upload a GPX and it opens on the map with its own distance, ascent and profile. It is kept exactly as recorded unless you ask for it to be recalculated for a sport.

Can I recalculate an imported track for another sport?

Yes — that is the point of importing one. Hand it to a different engine and you get a version of the same idea routed for how you are actually going out.

Trips and stories

What is a multi-track story?

One page that holds several tracks as a single journey: total distance and elevation across all of them, while each stage keeps its own track, elevation profile, photos and notes.

Can I use it for a triathlon or a multisport day?

Yes. Swim, bike and run are three tracks and one event, so they become one post — including the swim, which is recorded rather than routed.

Is what I plan public?

No, unless you publish it. Routes and trips are private by default; publishing is a deliberate action, and it is what puts a story in Explore for other people to read.
